Foreword by Consul-General, Andrew Seaton
A warm welcome to the British Consulate-General's photo review of 2008.
One of the highlights of the year for Hong Kong has been its role in hosting the Equestrian Games of the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics. The Consulate was very much involved in helping the British equestrian teams at these events, and also in assisting both the British Olympic and Paralympic squads during the training camps which they held in Macao. You will see in the review some photographs marking this.
What the review also makes clear is
the enormous breadth of the Consulate's work. As well as the Olympics
work this has ranged from visits by members of the Royal Family,
Cabinet Ministers, the Lord Mayor of London and Royal Naval ships
to events on climate change - a big theme for us this year - Islamic
finance, urban regeneration, gifted education and healthcare. Consulate
teams have travelled around the region to help British nationals
affected by, for example, the Sichuan earthquake and the closing
of Bangkok airport. We have raised money for local charities - and
had some fun - through our participation in the Dragon Boat races,
the Dress Special day and other events.
A very full year. The months since my arrival in April seem to have flown by. The Year of the Ox is unlikely to be any quieter.
